A Zeeman slower is a device used in atomic physics to reduce the velocity of a beam of atoms, allowing for the cooling and trapping of neutral atoms using magnetic fields and resonant laser light. By exploiting the Zeeman effect, it creates an extended interaction region within which the atoms are constantly decelerated through photon absorption and emission cycles.
