Melting point depression occurs when the Melting point of a substance is lowered by the presence of impurities or other substances, due to the disruption of the solid crystal lattice. This phenomenon is commonly observed in solutions and mixtures, where the addition of a solute decreases the temperature at which the solid phase becomes liquid.
