Hydrodynamic lubrication occurs when a full fluid film separates two surfaces in relative motion, preventing direct contact and minimizing friction and wear. This regime is achieved when the lubricant's viscosity and the relative speed of the surfaces generate sufficient pressure to support the load, forming a stable lubricating film.
