Buddhist monasticism represents a disciplined way of life dedicated to the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment, embodying the teachings of the Buddha through meditation, ethical living, and community service. It serves as a cornerstone for the preservation and dissemination of Buddhist teachings, offering a path to liberation from suffering for both monastics and lay followers.
Southeast Asian Buddhism predominantly follows the Theravāda tradition, which emphasizes the original teachings of the Buddha and the Pāli Canon as its scriptural foundation. It plays a significant role in the cultural and spiritual life across countries like Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos, integrating local customs and practices into its religious framework.

The Pali Canon, also known as the Tipitaka, is the authoritative scripture of Theravada Buddhism, composed of three 'baskets' or collections: the Vinaya Pitaka, the Sutta Pitaka, and the Abhidhamma Pitaka. It serves as a comprehensive guide to the teachings of the Buddha, covering monastic rules, discourses, and philosophical analyses, and is written in the Pali language, which is an ancient Middle Indo-Aryan language closely related to the dialect spoken by the Buddha himself.
