Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy 0
Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), also known as mad cow disease, is a neurodegenerative disease in cattle caused by prions, which are misfolded proteins that induce abnormal folding of specific proteins in the brain. The disease can be transmitted to humans through consumption of contaminated beef, leading to a variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), a fatal brain disorder.
