The Bayer process is the principal industrial means of refining bauxite to produce alumina (aluminum oxide), which is the precursor to aluminum production. This process involves the digestion of bauxite in a hot sodium hydroxide solution, which leaches aluminum hydroxide from the ore, leaving behind impurities as a solid residue known as red mud.
