Anal fissures are small tears in the lining of the anus that can cause severe pain and bleeding during bowel movements. They are often caused by passing hard stools, but can also result from chronic diarrhea or inflammatory bowel diseases, and typically heal with conservative treatments such as dietary adjustments and topical medications.
