An Enrolled Agent (EA) is a federally-authorized tax practitioner who has demonstrated expertise in tax matters and is empowered by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for audits, collections, and appeals. To become an EA, one must pass the Special Enrollment Examination or have five years of experience working for the IRS, followed by completing continuing education requirements to maintain the credential.
