Viruses are microscopic infectious agents composed of genetic material, either DNA or RNA, encased in a protein coat called a capsid, and sometimes surrounded by a lipid envelope. Their structure allows them to attach to and penetrate host cells, where they hijack the cellular machinery to replicate and propagate the infection.
