Turbidity units are a measure of the cloudiness or haziness of a fluid caused by large numbers of individual particles that are generally invisible to the naked eye, similar to smoke in air. The most common units used to quantify turbidity are Nephelometric Turbidity units (NTU) and Formazin Nephelometric Units (FNU), which are based on the scattering of light by suspended particles in the fluid.
