A superstrate language is a dominant language that influences another language, typically in contact situations such as colonization, where it often provides vocabulary and other features. This influence can lead to the formation of a pidgin or creole, in which the superstrate language contributes the majority of the lexicon while the grammatical structure is adapted from the substrate language.
