Subnormal numbers, also known as denormalized numbers, are floating-point numbers that fill the underflow gap around zero in the IEEE 754 standard. They allow for the representation of numbers smaller than the smallest normal floating-point number, providing a gradual underflow and maintaining precision in calculations involving very small numbers.
