The spoils system is a practice where political leaders give government jobs to their supporters as a reward for their assistance in getting them elected, often leading to widespread corruption and inefficiency. This system was prevalent in the 19th century United States and was eventually reformed by the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act of 1883, which aimed to establish a merit-based system for federal employment.
