Reed-Solomon codes are a group of error-correcting codes that are widely used to detect and correct multiple symbol errors in data transmission and storage systems. They are particularly effective in applications where errors occur in bursts, such as CDs, DVDs, and QR codes, due to their ability to reconstruct the original data even when a portion of it is corrupted.
