Raw natural gas is a mixture of hydrocarbons and various impurities extracted directly from the earth, primarily consisting of methane but also containing ethane, propane, butane, and pentanes. Before it can be used as fuel, it must undergo processing to remove impurities and separate the different hydrocarbons for specific uses.
