A preliminary injunction is a court order issued early in a lawsuit which prevents the defendant from acting in a certain way until the case is resolved, aiming to preserve the status quo and prevent irreparable harm. It is a provisional remedy that requires the plaintiff to demonstrate a likelihood of success on the merits, potential for irreparable harm, balance of equities, and public interest considerations.
