Photorespiration is a process in plants where the enzyme RuBisCO oxygenates RuBP, leading to a loss of energy and carbon that would otherwise be used in photosynthesis. This process is considered inefficient because it counteracts photosynthesis by consuming ATP and releasing CO2, especially under conditions of high oxygen and low carbon dioxide concentrations.
