A permutation test is a non-parametric statistical test used to determine the significance of an observed effect by comparing it to a distribution of effects generated by randomly shuffling the data. It is particularly useful when the assumptions of traditional parametric tests, such as normality, are not met or when dealing with small sample sizes.
