Objectification Theory explains how cultural practices that reduce people to objects, primarily in terms of their body or appearance, can negatively impact their mental health by internalizing an outside perspective. This phenomenon is especially prevalent in gender dynamics where societal standards enforce overly critical self-monitoring that can lead to anxiety, depression, or eating disorders.
