A normal fault is a type of dip-slip fault where the hanging wall moves downward relative to the footwall, typically occurring in regions experiencing extensional tectonics. These faults are commonly associated with divergent plate boundaries and can create features like rift valleys and horst and graben structures in the Earth's crust.
