Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle, known as the myocardium, which can reduce the heart's ability to pump blood and cause rapid or abnormal heart rhythms. It can be caused by infections, certain medications, or autoimmune diseases, and its severity ranges from mild cases that resolve on their own to severe cases that can lead to heart failure, sudden cardiac arrest, or death.
