The Mercator Projection is a cylindrical map projection that represents lines of constant course, making it useful for navigation but distorting size and shape, especially near the poles. It preserves angles and shapes of small objects, which is why it's often used for nautical charts, but it greatly exaggerates the size of landmasses at higher latitudes.
