Joan of Arc was a French peasant girl who claimed to have received visions from God instructing her to support Charles VII and recover France from English domination during the Hundred Years' War. Her leadership and subsequent martyrdom at the stake in 1431 made her a symbol of French unity and nationalism, and she was canonized as a saint in 1920.
