Infectious proteins, known as prions, are misfolded proteins that can induce other normal proteins to also misfold, leading to a cascade of protein misfolding and aggregation. This process is responsible for various neurodegenerative diseases, as the accumulation of these misfolded proteins disrupts normal cellular function.
