Single-unit smooth muscle, also known as visceral smooth muscle, is a type of smooth muscle where cells are connected by gap junctions, allowing them to contract as a single unit. This type of muscle is found in the walls of hollow organs like the intestines and blood vessels, where coordinated contractions are necessary for functions such as peristalsis and vasoconstriction.
The muscularis propria is a critical layer of smooth muscle found in the walls of various hollow organs, including the gastrointestinal tract, responsible for the organ's motility and the movement of contents through it. It consists of an inner circular and an outer longitudinal layer, which work in concert to produce peristaltic movements essential for digestion and excretion.
