Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) is a protein on the surface of the hepatitis B virus; it is the primary marker used to detect active hepatitis B infection. Its presence in the blood indicates that the person is infectious, and it is often the first detectable viral antigen to appear during infection.
