Gideon V. Wainwright 0
Gideon v. Wainwright is a landmark 1963 Supreme Court case in which the Court unanimously ruled that the Sixth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution requires states to provide attorneys to defendants in criminal cases who cannot afford one themselves. This decision extended the right to counsel, previously guaranteed in federal cases, to state courts, significantly expanding the rights of the accused under the Fourteenth Amendment's Due Process Clause.
