Friedreich's ataxia is a genetic, progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by impaired muscle coordination (ataxia) that worsens over time. It is caused by a mutation in the FXN gene, leading to reduced levels of frataxin, a protein essential for mitochondrial function, which results in the degeneration of nerve tissue in the spinal cord and peripheral nerves.
