Fermentable oligosaccharides are short-chain carbohydrates that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine and can be fermented by bacteria in the colon, often causing digestive symptoms in sensitive individuals. They are a component of the FODMAPs diet, which is used to manage symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) by reducing intake of these and other fermentable carbohydrates.
