The epiphyseal line is a remnant of the growth plate found in the long bones of adults, indicating the location where bone growth in length previously occurred. Once bone elongation ceases after puberty, the growth plate ossifies, transforming into the epiphyseal line, which serves as a marker of skeletal maturity.
