Eons are the largest divisions of geological time, encompassing hundreds of millions to billions of years, and are used to organize Earth's history into comprehensible segments. The current eon, the Phanerozoic, began approximately 541 million years ago and is characterized by the presence of abundant animal and plant life in the fossil record.
