Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI) is a type of traumatic brain injury that occurs when the brain rapidly shifts inside the skull as an injury is occurring, causing extensive lesions in white matter tracts. It is a major cause of unconsciousness and persistent vegetative state after severe head trauma, often resulting in significant long-term neurological deficits.
