COX-1, or Cyclooxygenase-1, is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in maintaining the normal function of the stomach lining, kidneys, and platelets by producing prostaglandins. It is constitutively expressed in most tissues and its inhibition can lead to side effects such as gastric ulcers, which is a consideration in the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
