Cochlear amplification refers to the process by which outer hair cells in the cochlea enhance the sensitivity and frequency selectivity of the auditory system, allowing humans to detect and discriminate sounds with remarkable precision. This amplification is achieved through the electromotility of outer hair cells, which actively boost the mechanical vibrations of the basilar membrane in response to sound stimuli.
