The chelate effect refers to the enhanced stability of a coordination compound formed when a polydentate ligand binds to a metal ion, compared to the stability of complexes with equivalent monodentate ligands. This increased stability arises from the entropy gain associated with the release of more free molecules upon complexation and the formation of multiple bonds with the metal center, creating a more stable ring structure.
