Antigenic shift is a process by which two or more different strains of a virus combine to form a new subtype with a mixture of surface antigens, leading to significant changes that can result in pandemics. This phenomenon is particularly relevant in influenza viruses, where it can lead to the emergence of novel strains against which the population has little to no immunity.
