Rigor mortis is a postmortem change resulting in the stiffening of the body's muscles due to chemical changes in the muscles after death. It typically begins within 2 to 6 hours after death, peaks at around 12 hours, and gradually dissipates over the next 48 to 72 hours as decomposition progresses.
