Concept
An auxochrome is a functional group attached to a chromophore that modifies the ability of the chromophore to absorb light, often enhancing the color intensity and shifting the absorption wavelength. Auxochromes typically contain lone pairs of electrons, such as hydroxyl or amino groups, which can interact with the chromophore's Π-electron system to alter electronic transitions.
